Mindmap

A Mindmap is a tool used to visualise and organise ideas. For this montage the title of the song was the centre of the image. How we ignite our senses when we think of "Borderline". What do we see, feel, hear?

Borderline is about a soldier leaving for a war and leaving a loved one behind. There are many relationships tthat could represent this union: husband/wife, parent/child, /owner/pet. Although not represented on this map relationships are not only between people. They can be past and present, photograph and a memory, painter and their paintbrush.

Borders can be literal or symbolic. In this montage the border is symbolic of life and death, the start and finish of life for which we can choose to not.

Heading to the border requires a journey to be taken. The the old man is on a journey with many paths: one towards death and the seoncd journey through memories.

Time in this montage can interpreted as finite, compressed and circular. Death is the end of his time. The memories are compressed and the journey is short. The images tell the story in 1min 15 seconds. And then time is circular. Death isn't the finish, there is hope that they meet again - "No Borderline, No Borderline".

A pattern of images will not always conjure an emotion. The images can suggest an emotion but the viewers interpretation of these images will only deliver the emotion the viewer can or wants to feel. The images portrayed in the montage were intended to suggest sadness, love, loss and hope and many more.

Sound carries the mood and rhythm for the montage. The clock ticking can reflect time passing and the speed or loudness of the ticking can reflect the monet is closing in. The swirling wind is reflective of change and loneliness. Footsteps can reflect a journey, creating distance and a departure. Silence in this montage is idealised as bringing the most impact to this montage. It is an echo of loneliness and what comes after death, the sound after the last breath or the lack of a voice from the empty chair at the table.
